Boat Review: C&C 35 Mk III - 1986

Contributed by Owner: Tom Jones

Boat Name: Mercator

Boat Type: Sail - Cruiser/Racer

Mfg: C & C Yachts Model: 35 Mk III Feet: 34 Inches: 6.5

Year: 1986

Primary Use: Cruising

Other Use: Racing

Cockpit: T Shaped. Would benefit from being a foot or two longer but perfectly adequate for 4-6 cruising or 6-8 racing.

Cabin: Cabin is open and spacious with good bunks for 6. V area has privacy, head is decent size, Chart table and nav area luxurious. Nice use of teak. Very functional galley with 3 burner stove & oven standard, reasonable storage and counter space. Only complaint is a poorly insulted ice box. We burn more ice than fuel.

Construction: Well built. Way ahead of its time with the use of balsa coring, and waffle grid to add stiffness and strength to the hull.

Very well thought out access to all wiring, plumbing and through mounted winches, tracks et al. Joiner work is superior to most new boats.

Handling: Still a highly competitive club racer and a fast comfortable cruiser. Very close winded. A little bit tender, she needs beef on the rail racing and a reasonable sail pattern when cruising. On the wind cruising you need to shorten sail around 17 apparent.

Engine: Boat is a little underpowered with 2 blade max prop. Will cruise at 5.5-6 knots in a calm. Handles well and predictably around dock or mooring.

General: Have cruised and raced the boat from Maine to Virginia with absolute confidence A great dual purpose boat and a bargain on the used boat market given what you get.
