Review by Owner: Mark Gauthier

Model:  Tiara 4100 Open
Length: 41'
Year: 2002

Boat Name:  PICKLED EGG

Primary Use:

Family boating (And as you are aware...Dockside Entertaining)

Owner's Review:

I've been boating practically since I was born.  I believe I owned 5 boats before I owned my first car. The last boat I owned, before I was married, was a performance boat.  After I was married, I didn't own a performance boat.

This plan wasn't working out well at first.   Some say a marriage is give and take.   I might have given up my boat, but I couldn't take it anymore.  It was time to get out on the water and fast.  After going on a few trips with my wife, aboard my parents boat, she really started to like boat life.  I guess you could say, she saw the light.

In the early 90's, we started to look at boats that would fit our budget and fit our needs.  We must have looked at 6 different brands before we ended up settling on our first Tiara.  We purchased it for many reasons, one being that is was a lot of boat for it's size.  Another reason was that the quality of the boat jumps out at you every time you open a drawer or close a door.  The main reason we bought the boat was because the folks at Tiara cared about who we were and welcomed us into their family.

I must add that our first Tiara wasn't their 90's flagship, 43' Open.  It was a 27' Sport Boat.  Our 41' Open is our fourth Tiara to date.  Since our first signing, we have been treated by the dealer as well as the factory as if we just bought the Queen Mary.   This defines the confidence Tiara Yachts has in it's people, dealers and product.

By the time we started looking at the 41' Open, my wife and I decided that our summers were going to be dedicated to boating.  Our goal was to be at a different port on the boat  every weekend between  Memorial Day through Labor Day.  If you know the Great Lakes, you know that every weekend is
not necessarily a good boating weekend.  Weather issues during the summer sometimes limit your ability to travel, cutting your short summer even shorter.  We were looking for a boat to extend our time on Lake Michigan.

Selection Criteria:

We had a few criteria that we needed.  One was that the boat must be able to handle rough weather and the other was that I didn't want to spend most of my time fixing it.  When we wanted to go, we're going.  I have the good fortune of being a supplier to Tiara as well. This gave me access to the people that really know the product inside and out.   When I approached their Engineering and Marketing staff with these two criteria, hands down, they pointed me in the direction of the 41' Open.  To date, we've never regretted the decision.

Aboard the Boat:

Once you board the boat, you will notice the huge back deck.  This is absolutely a wonder for entertaining.  We can comfortably sit seven or eight people on the back deck and still have room to walk through. The upper cockpit/helm area has an "L" shaped lounge to port with an adjustable helm
seat starboard.  From the stern helm seat sits an Ice Maker, cooler, sink and plenty of stowage for what ever.  The cooler they put in this boat is actually a converted live bait well.  For us non-fishing guys, this turns into one of the most handy coolers you could ever imagine.  And, the most attractive feature to the upper cockpit is the visibility you have.

From the Helm:

From the helm, either standing or sitting, you have full view of the bow as well as the stern, both corners.  In a blow, this area has a calming effect due to its shear size and location on the boat.  Words can not describe the control you feel from the helm due to its well laid out design.  I dare you
to stand behind the destroyer wheel of that boat and still resist the desire to cut lines.

The Cabin:

The cabin of the 41' Open is perfect for us.  We love teak.  Teak floors, teak walls, and teak trim everywhere.  With Tiara's help, we were able to pick fabrics on the couch and forward berth to lighten up the interior of the boat.  The galley is huge for a 41' boat.  During the summer we enjoy eating down at the boat during the week simply due to the fact that it is easier to work in this galley than it is at home.  Everything is laid out right where it needs to be.  There is plenty of storage for any cooking appliance you could ever need on a boat.  In addition, there is storage under the floor which I've used to store extra fold up seats, portable gas grill, and extra lines.

The Head has Plenty of Room:

The head has plenty of room.  A separate shower allows for easy clean up and compliments the area quite well.  Storage is plentiful for towels, soaps and what ever else you want to put in a bathroom.  Forward is the master stateroom with a centered queen size berth.  There is storage under the bed
as well and is extremely easy to access with the help of gas assist springs to help lift the bed.  There is plenty of storage both port and starboard for hanging clothes as well as storing folded ones.

Boat Performance:

Performance on the boat is hardly beatable.  Sure there are many boats that will go faster, handle heavy sea's better or possibly more fuel efficient, but Tiara combines the best of all worlds with this boat and the results are nothing short of spectacular in our mind.

With the Cummins QSM 11 at 635 hp each, we run at around 2000 RPM at normal cruise.  At this engine speed we achieve 33 MPH and burn around 44 GPH.  One very impressive feature we found is that at this speed we are only running 87 dB.  Most boats I've seen of this caliber run 89 dB to 90 dB.  Comparing notes with other boaters, 0.75 mpg is not bad for a 27,500 lbs boat this size.  With the fuel capacity we have, it is estimated that we have a range of around 350 miles.

Rough water performance is one really positive feature on this boat.  A following sea condition is almost a non factor.  We've had the unfortunate pleasure of discovering what it will do in a head sea.    I assure you the boat will handle much more weather than we can.  Quoting wave heights and wind speeds we've experienced with the boat would assure a doubter in the crowd.  All I can say is trust me on this one.

On the New 41 Open Updated:

Today, the 41' Open has been updated by the 42' Open.  Every aspect of this new boat still has all the highlight of ours, plus some.  With larger engine packages available, sleeker lines, multiple interior layouts and a couple of options, it's easy to see why this boat is a  proven winner for Tiara and will be for many years to come.

Summary:

Short of writing a novel on the boat, words can't do justice to the concrete construction, fit and finish, as well as the livability you experience aboard one of these boats.  Fine reasons to look at Tiara's for your next boat. Always remember, at the end of the day, nothing gives you more satisfaction
than knowing you've made the right decision.  Justification for buying a boat is probably one of life's harder things to do, why make it harder questioning your decision.   Once you meet the people like we did ... on the assembly line, engineering staff, customer service, marketing as well as their dealer network,  there is no better reason to consider a Tiara.
