x New at the Show:

Oyster 53 Sailing Yacht

Created by the Oyster Design Team, with hull lines by Rob Humphreys, the Oyster 53 emulates her larger sister, the 56, setting new standards of performance, style and comfort.

The Design Team approach, linked with the use of powerful integrated CAD design computers, has created a yacht that we believe will set a new standard in design excellence in this size. For a fifty-three foot yacht, this Oyster is very unusual in offering a spacious cockpit and a large saloon, together with up to four separate sleeping cabins, but maintaining a stylish, well-proportioned outboard profile.

The Team have co-ordinated the styling and an integrated, ergonomically designed cockpit, whose technical specification originated from the Department of Ergonomics at Loughborough University.

Performance and handling under sail and power are well above average, gaining from the undoubted skill of Rob Humphreys whose Whitbread, World Championship and Europe 1 New Man STAR winning race designs and the new Chay Blyth fleet, have established his international reputation for safe, fast yachts.

The fuller form aft coincidentally produces increased form stability and, in flattening the wavetrain, improves directional stability by allowing the rudder to work more efficiently, negating the effect of a suspending quarter wave.  Images of a heavy displacement hull pushing its limit, almost hanging off its own quarter wave with a white-knuckled helmsman wondering where he is going to go next, can be put to one side.

The Oyster 53 features a shapely, low center of gravity, bulb type, lead ballast keel, which has benefited from Rob Humphreys’ extensive wind tunnel testing on foil designs during some of his better known race boat projects. This keel gives optimum stability with only moderate draft, while an optional shoal draft variant with an extended keel stub is also available.

The interior layout offers a galley in the usual walkthrough position alongside the cockpit. This arrangement works well at sea and, with an optional opening port into the cockpit side, is well ventilated even in rough weather. The owners cabin features a centerline style berth of generous proportions that incorporates a special sprung base for extra comfort.

Like her smaller sisters, the saloon is configured to make best use of the yachts generous 15’3” (4.66m) beam with oversize opening hull ports and forward Deck Saloon windows that open when conditions allow providing unbeatable fair weather ventilation. The hull ports provide good outboard visibility when the crew are seated.

Although the 53 is unusual in offering four sleeping cabins, there is also the obvious opportunity to forgo one of these and create a dedicated machinery room/workshop if required.
