All In The Family: Pearson Yachts True North 33
Functional design and classic styling are two principles Pearson Yachts have adhered to from the beginning. Family cruising is the vision behind the True North line, and the 33 exemplifies the Pearson approach to boat building. Plenty of deckspace, and all the amenities you'd hope to find make it a great cruiser and weekender.

Pearson Yachts’ True North 38 reintroduced us to
the Pearson family tradition of innovation, practicality, and value in
powerboats. To our delight, another family member looks about to turn
in an encore performance. The new True North 33, "baby sister"
to the 38, made its debut at the 2003 Annapolis Boat Show, giving those
interested in no-nonsense family cruising a new entry point into the Pearson
range.
At the helm of Pearson Yachts is Mark Pearson, who conceived of the True
North series as waterborne SUVs for the modern cruising family. The True
North 33 is no miniaturized 38 though. Pearson was determined to endow
the 33 with the same performance and practicality of her counterpart, the
True North 38.
The New True North 33 - The Latest
Waterborne SUV
Like any good SUV, the True North 33 fits enough gear to fill every day
with enough activities to leave any captain (or his attention-span-free
kids) exhausted by sundown. Throw the dinghy in the cockpit, the kayaks
and canoes on the deckhouse roof, add a couple bikes, some fishing or
snorkeling gear, and everyone still has a comfortable perch while underway.
With the vast cockpit just steps away from the helm, galley and on deck
saloon, the only reason to go below during the day is to catch a nap in
the ample V-berths or use the spacious head and stall shower. Opening
ports and a large overhead hatch stave off stuffiness, making for well
ventilated accommodations below.
Flexibility and Functional Design
for Family Cruising
The small but important touches that adorn the cockpit consistently reveal
Pearson’s focus on flexible and functional design. The dual-function seat
and convertible dinette table are but two examples. When lowered, the
seat is the forward section of the dinette but, with the flip of a switch,
an electro-hydraulic lift adjusts it to serve as the backrest for a two-place
companion seat next to the helm. The table lowers to form the center section
of the dinette birth.
In order to load and unload all of that gear that the True North can
accommodate, Pearson has, again, proved its thoughtfulness by integrating
a pair of wide “clam shell” transom doors. These doors not only make
dinghy launch and recovery a snap, but also turn the cockpit into one
gigantic swimming platform.

Mark Pearson Is Always Thinking

Spend some time with Mark Pearson and you will quickly
learn that he is always thinking about how to design distinctive boats that
are enjoyable, easy to maintain and reasonably priced. That's been the
Pearson philosophy since the family started doing business back in the
1950s. Today the tradition continues with the True North series of
fast, sensible family cruisers.
Pearson Yachts built
its reputation on innovative thinking and by producing boats of superior
performance and remarkable value. Embracing this approach, Mark Pearson has
re-launched Pearson® Yachts as a division of TPI Composites LLC, one of the
world's leading manufacturers of advanced composites for the marine
industry.
TPI, with a workforce of over 300 and a modern
manufacturing facility of 250,000 square feet, is known for its proprietary
SCRIMP® resin infusion technology, a manufacturing technique that results in
products that are lighter and stronger than those made with conventional
fiberglass.

Pearson's first new design, the True North 38, is a
fast, sensible family cruiser inspired by the New England lobster boat.
Following its successful debut, the True North 33 is being launched in the
early fall of 2003. Both designs embody the kind of forward thinking for
which Pearson is known.
They represent a refreshing reassessment of how
recreational boats are really used. Having built more than 15,000 power and
sailing vessels over the years, Pearson saw a need to once again focus on
value, functionality and simplicity.
Fun, Efficient Design That
Lasts
Taking advantage of today's advanced technology is
important as long as it results in improved performance and a more enjoyable
boating experience. All too often builders have added feature after feature,
gadget after gadget, and pound after pound to end up with fuel hungry,
expensive and problem-ridden vessels that soon take all the fun out of
boating.
Starting with the True North series, Pearson® Yachts
re-establishes its clear position of offering boats that are fun and
enjoyable. Economical, efficient, good performance, seaworthiness, and being
built-to-last h ave
always been key characteristics of boats bearing the legendary Pearson name.
Fortunately, some things will never change.
Feel free to contact the company and arrange a visit
to the new Pearson facility. You will discover how much thinking has gone
into building boats for the next generation. |

True North 33 (Cont'd...)
It All Begins With A
Vacuum, Ends With a Superior HullThe hull
and deck of the True North series are constructed using TPI Composites
proprietary SCRIMP® resin infusion technology, a manufacturing process that
results in products that are lighter and stronger than those made with
conventional fiberglass techniques.

This is accomplished by using a vacuum system and
fiberglass knits and wovens to allow resin to migrate through the laminate.
Resin is infused through dry glass and core material to ensure full wet-out
and eliminate voids.
This results in a fiberglass structure that consists
of 70% glass and 30% resin, versus the 40% glass 60% resin ratio obtained
through traditional techniques. This means the material is lighter and
stronger.

As a result of this advanced technology and years of
material testing, the True North 33 comes with a 5-year structural warranty
and a transferable 10-year blister warranty. TPI Composites, parent company
of Pearson Yachts, currently builds the line of J/Boats as well as Alerion
Express sailboats. Over the years, TPI has built more than 15,000 power and
sailing vessels under a number of brand names. For more detailed information

Pearson Yachts True North 33 (Cont'd...)
A True Cruiser with Exceptional Strength
In order to create that vast ninety square-foot cockpit, Pearson designers developed a unique solution, housing the engine below the cockpit deckhouse solely in a hull motor pod. The engine is easily reached from the saloon and is surrounded by ample space, making for easy maintenance. The 370 horsepower Yanmar diesel (a 440hp Yanmar is optional) is mounted not only to save deck space but, equipped with an Aquadrive shaft coupler, also reduces noise and vibration significantly.
Her beautiful sweeping sheerline, plumb bow, curvaceous tumblehome, and reverse transom aren’t just for looks. As a Division of TPI Composites LLC, Pearson utilizes the company’s proprietary SCRIMP® resin infusion technology endowing the hull of the True North 33 with exceptional strength at a lower weight than conventional fiberglass construction could provide.

This hull will cruise through the chop without complaint while giving her pilot generous 360 degree views through large, unobstructed pilothouse windows. A low running angle makes for excellent forward visibility at speed, and the True North’s bow thruster lets you take full advantage of the all-around visibility in close quarters.
Don’t let her New England lobster boat looks fool you, the True North 33 is thoroughly modern boat that embodies the longstanding values of the Pearson family.
She is a no-nonsense cruiser that allows you to enjoy your time on the water with no fussing, and put her to bed with a quick hose down.
This boat is a fine addition to the True North line, and no-doubt worthy of the Pearson name. Welcome to the family! |
