Tornado Olympic Class Sailing - HoldenSailing

The Tornado has been in the Olympics since 1976 and is the fastest of the Olympic Classes. At 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, and with a 32 foot mast, it weighs less than 372 pounds fully rigged. Following the 2000 Sydney Olympics the Tornado underwent a major retrofit. The class added twin trapeze, a square top mainsail, self-tacking jib, and most importantly an asymmetrical spinnaker. The Tornado catamaran creates excitement. It is the fastest of the Olympic boats – capable of reaching speeds above 30 knots! It is a challenging boat to sail, demanding the same kind of daring and skill seen in other "extreme" Olympic sports. Like the downhill event in alpine skiing, Tornado racing is about speed, exhilaration, and intensity!
