Butterfly Jigging - A Fish Catching Machine

The Shimano Butterfly Jigging System could be the answer to your fishing woes. Developed in Japan in the early 1990’s to catch Bluefin tuna in depths of up to 500 feet, the Shimano Butterfly Jigging System has been proven to out fish bait in many instances when the fish are finicky and won’t bite.

These jigs are widely known as the "butterfly" jig because of their distinctive flutter-like zigzag motion produced under the water. The jig moves this way because of the unique way the lure's edges are cut. Because of the sporadic movement and action produced by the "butterfly" jig, it entices fish to strike more often than traditional deep jigs.

The Shimano Butterfly Jig lets you feel every movement while retrieving the lure. The bite is like electricity flowing through the rod, with every movement of the fish being exaggerated because of the sensitivity of the tackle. It takes you to a completely different level of awareness versus the regular tackle we are used to fishing, giving the angler a heightened sense of the true power of a fighting fish.

Field Testers say it’s “better than live bait”

From its start in the early ’90’s, where anglers in Japan fished depths down to 500 feet for bluefin tuna with the first generation of super lines coupled with fluorocarbon shock leaders, Shimano’s product development staff has closely watched this revolutionary change in deep water jigging, " said Ben Secrest with Shimano. “Our counterparts at Shimano Japan created a new lure design we call the Butterfly jig, and combined with the right tackle, the complete system - rod, reel, line, leader and jig – increases sensitivity to detect bites and offers anglers an exciting new way to catch finicky fish.”

The Shimano Butterfly™ Jigging System utilizes tackle that is extremely manageable and lets you fight the fish more effectively rather than fighting the tackle. This is as close as you can get to hand to hand combat with a fish and definitely gives you the advantage.

Secrest adds that from field testing in U.S. waters, from amberjack, snapper, grouper and kingfish off the Florida Keys and Gulf Coast waters, tuna and stripers in the northeast, or off the West Coast for yellowtail, tuna, calico bass or rock fish, the Butterfly Jigging System has proven to have a better fish catching percentages than those anglers using live bait. “Even fishing heavily-pressured area such as close in wrecks found off the Florida Keys, we’ve been able to hook and land numerous big amberjacks, groupers and cobia, "said Secrest, “while those drifting live bait near us struggled to get a bite.

Butterfly Jigs

The Shimano Butterfly jigs are available in two distinct styles - regular and long. The regular jig provides a vertical ‘walking the dog’ presentation, while the long jig, with its patented 3-D shape, provides a lure that is able to move horizontally at depths never before possible.

The patented asymmetrical 3-D shape of the longer Butterfly jigs “provides a tremendous amount of side-to-side movement during the retrieve, and a unique roll-and-wobble action on the fall,” Sakai explains, “and the center of gravity of these jigs makes them dart long distances while retrieving, giving them horizontal action that’s common with surface lures. This action just drives fish into a reaction bite frenzy.” Shimano offers 62 Butterfly jigs in the system, two styles in various colors and sizes.

It's a Complete System not just a Lure.

It is the entire fishing rig setup that makes the "butterfly" jig so effective. In addition to the "butterfly" jig, anglers also need to have the correct action rod and reel and also use braided line.

The Shimano Butterfly Jig System is based on four components, a new lure called the Shimano Butterfly Jig which has a very unique action both on the fall and retrieve, a new sensitive, lightweight, very durable rod series called Shimano Trevala Rods, a new generation of super lines, and high speed, high power reels like the Shimano Torsa, Shimano Trinidad and Shimano Stella.  The combination of these products makes catching fish easier, more productive, and flat out fun! The new Shimano Butterfly Jig System is a "MUST HAVE" for a wide variety of angling situations!
